The programme will explore the legend of Zerzura from its roots in medieval Arabic literature to the expeditions of the twenties and thirties. We shall explore how the desert has changed in size and nature over the last 10,000 years from life sustaining savannah to the hyper arid dessert we have today - so inhospitable not even flies can survive. We shall show why oases exist, likely locations of the lost oasis based upon geographical and geological data and legends, the buying and rebuilding of the Model A's, the formation of the expedition team, the expedition itself, the combining of satellite photography and imaging with the original 1930's maps that are still used today. Interviews with Harding Newman and the black and white cine film from 1935, we shall explore what drove these adventurers to risk all to explore the Libyan Desert without GPS navigation and no outside backup.
Does Zerzura still exist, is it a figment of the imagination, is it lost beneath the encroaching sands of the Sahara or does it exist only in the minds of those who believe in adventure.
