There
are several books that cover this topic. None so thorough. Yes, this is
published in part by Land Rover. No, that does not affect the content. Tom
Sheppard has been there and done it, whether in 4x4 or on motorbike. This is
*indispensable*. It covers everything from team selection through to
after-expedition reports, including exhaustive details of vehicle and equipment
choice and modifications. Unbiased, dry and factual, with a smattering of humour
from an RAF officer turned expeditions expert. Very, very good.
Partly includes stuff from the Royal Geographical Society
'Desert Expeditions' book, updated, but also other stuff. Together with an
area-specific guide for the GPS locations (eg. Chris Scott's Sahara guide, also
on Amazon, though some of Scott's conclusions on equipment and vehicles are
questionable) this is all you need for exploration of an area.
This is *the* all-time classic manual for exploration of
arduous terrain by vehicle. By-the-by its also a hell of a travel book!
